Overview

Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of the best hiking treks in the Himalayan region around the beautiful mountain range of Nepal. This trek offers you an amazing opportunity to see the rich Gurung culture, discover stunning landscape and thrilling secret world of the Himalayas. The walk takes you through lush forests, terraced fields, traditional mountain towns and breathtaking landscapes to a unique alpine village of Annapurna Sanctuary.

Walk to the base of the tallest peak in the Annapurna range and be rewarded with stunning views of nature's best creation of dramatic Himalayan peaks. The reward at the end of the trek is the stunning view of a natural amphitheatre with some of the highest and most dramatic peaks in the Annapurna range. During the entire walk you may witness majestic peaks of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna and Annapurna I. The trek provides an up-close perspective of the rocky mountain ranges, it seems as if the mountains are rising directly from the valley providing a 360-degree Himalayan view.

A Journey Through the Annapurna Sanctuary

The walk starts in the lower foothills near Pokhara, a place of traditional villages, terraced rice paddies, rivers and lush foliage. The trail ascends through a forest of rhododendron, oak, bamboo and other Himalayan plants.

One of the obstacles of the walk is traversing what seems to be an interminable succession of stone steps. This is the track of the famed Gurung people of the area. Many lovely villages and wooded hillsides are encountered, with stunning vistas of the valley at every turn.

The trail continues and becomes more alpine, with trees giving way to rocky terrain as it approaches Machhapuchhre Base Camp, and then the even more magnificent Annapurna Base Camp where a hiker can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks in the sanctuary.

Culture and Gurung Heritage

The Annapurna region is also famed for traditional Gurung culture and centuries-old way of living. On the way you will see unusual traditional towns, stone houses, Buddhist and Hindu temples, stunning terraced fields and most importantly mountain hospitality.

The Gurung are also considered to be the ancestors of the Gurkha military, hence there are lots of veterans in the area. Meeting the local village culture and chatting with the inhabitants is an extra adventure and a unique immersion into the local way of life.

Nature and Wildlife

The trail passes through a variety of diverse ecosystems making it a perfect site to experience the incredible biodiversity of the Annapurna Conservation Area. The lower sections of the trail pass terraced farm fields, woodlands, and sub-tropical flora.

Further along the trail, the plants turn alpine.

Also there are number of Himalayan animals like musk deer, Himalayan birds etc. in this area. However be aware that wildlife spotting is not guarantyd and the shift in vegetation and landscape is an adventure itself for nature lovers.

Jhinu Danda and Natural Hot Springs

Depending on the route you choose, you may be able to take an optional excursion to Jhinu Danda for a hot spring experience. After days of trekking in the trails, nothing is better than to soak in one of the hot water springs, nestled amidst Himalayan landscape overlooking the river.

Important Information for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

  • The Annapurna Base Camp trip reaches an altitude of 4,130 meters (13,550 ft). Hence altitude sickness is a matter of worry. The gradual ascent of this trek allows for better acclimatisation, but you should never overlook the signs of altitude sickness, such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, unusual weariness or difficulty breathing. Take it easy and drink lots of fluids. If you have any of these symptoms let your guide.
  • Weather in the mountains is quite unpredictable. The walk could be sunny, rainy, severe winds, freezing temperatures and/or snowy, even at higher altitudes. Make sure you bring clothing for all kind of weather. Layer, rain gear, clothing for colder weather, gloves and a suitable sleeping bag.
  • The trail is rocky, slippery at times, and includes stairs, uneven stretches of trail, bridges, and more. It can get slippery during wet periods like rain or snow so it is best to wear good shoes. It is best to spend the time needed on the trail rather than rushing it I would advise to get proper trekking boots, trekking poles, and good shoes.
  • It is vital to stay hydrated at higher altitudes. Make sure to drink enough of water during the day, and take a water bottle or hydration pack with you. It is also crucial to eat healthy meals and snacks to keep your energy up on your hikes. Calories are vital so be sure to carry along trail mix, energy bars or other healthy snacks that will provide you the calories you need to make it through the day.
  • The Annapurna region is a Himalayan land where a number of ethnic communities including the Gurung live. Thus, during the hiking tour, the culture and customs of the local people have to be respected. Special attention should be devoted to religious sites, villages and wilderness areas. It is also important to follow the directions of expert guides and to be respectful of the environment and local fauna.
